Introducing the Cadence Engine: Scheduling That Respects the Real World
The Cadence Engine is the scheduling engine behind Dynamic Schedules. It turns complex workforce requirements into practical schedules without treating people as interchangeable, achieving 100% coverage on documented NHS and care home benchmarks.

"Creating a rota is easy. Creating one that covers every required position while respecting people's availability, qualifications, rest, leave and contracted hours is the hard part. That is why we built our Cadence Engine: the scheduling engine behind Dynamic Schedules. Cadence Engine is designed to turn complex workforce requirements into practical schedules without treating people as interchangeable. It evaluates role requirements, approved leave, availability, weekly-hour limits, rest periods and qualification needs together, so coverage is achieved within the rules that matter to real teams. The aim is not to make a rota look full at any cost. It is to produce one that can actually be worked."
Coverage without cutting corners
A high coverage percentage only means something if the underlying schedule is compliant. Cadence Engine measures coverage as the proportion of required shift positions that are assigned, while enforcing the configured workforce constraints. An assignment is not counted simply because a person is free on the calendar: it must also be compatible with their role, availability, approved leave, working-hours limits and rest requirements. This gives managers a more useful answer than "the rota is full". It shows whether the rota is staffed in a way that can actually be worked.
Current benchmark results
We test our Cadence Engine against deterministic staffing scenarios so results can be repeated and independently checked. In the Care Home Rota scenario, 45 staff were scheduled across 14 days, achieving 100% coverage with 112 of 112 required positions assigned. In the NHS Hospital Ward scenario, 120 staff across three wards were scheduled across 28 days, also achieving 100% coverage with 1,260 of 1,260 required positions assigned. Both benchmark schedules completed with zero fatal constraint violations. The hospital scenario reflects a 24-hour ward environment, including Early, Late and Night bands, Registered Nurse and Health Care Assistant requirements, leave, qualifications and rolling rest rules. The care-home scenario tests a two-week rota across a mixed workforce and multiple shift bands.Benchmark SummaryScenario 01Care Home Rota100%112 of 112 positions assigned45Staff14Days112ShiftsScenario 02NHS 3 Hospital Ward Generations (at once)100%1,260 of 1,260 positions assigned120Staff28Days1,260Shifts Coverage UnfilledResults vary with workforce capacity and scenario configuration.
Built for the trade-offs managers face
Scheduling is rarely about finding any available person. It is about protecting scarce skills for the shifts that need them most. Our Cadence Engine uses forward-looking allocation to avoid consuming the only qualified or available person too early in a schedule. That helps it make better decisions when a later shift has fewer viable candidates. For managers, that means fewer avoidable gaps, clearer visibility of genuine staffing shortfalls, and schedules that better reflect operational reality. When full coverage is not possible, the result should not hide the problem. The Cadence Engine is designed to identify unfilled positions rather than create assignments that breach the rules. That distinction matters: a visible staffing gap can be acted on; an invalid schedule creates problems later.
Benchmarking with context
Benchmarks are not promises that every organisation will achieve the same result. Coverage depends on the workforce, role mix, demand, rules and availability supplied to the scheduler. Our benchmark results are generated from deterministic, independently validated staffing scenarios. They measure required shift positions assigned while enforcing configured working-hours, rest, availability, qualification and leave constraints. We do not use benchmark coverage to claim that every real-world rota can reach 100%. Instead, the figures show what the Cadence Engine can achieve when demand and workforce capacity are feasible, and how it behaves when they are not.
"Our Cadence Engine gives logistics and scheduling teams a strong foundation for building rotas that are both well-covered and workable. Whether you are managing a care setting, clinical service, hospitality venue, multi-site operation or another shift-based workforce, the goal is the same: put the right person in the right place, at the right time, without compromising the rules that protect your people and your service."
